Fish of the time! Do you know the tripletail fish Lobotes surinamensis?
Abstract: The world aquaculture is a growing alternative source of food production due to 1) uncontrolled population growth; 2) the stagnation (or even decrease) of production by capture; thus, forcing men to look for alternative food resources to solve food-related problems. The total world production of aquaculture was estimated at 59 mt (million tons) in 2010 and reaching 82 mt in 2018 and several species are being considered in this activity, with the objective of developing technologies for the production of fish in captivity, which is the case of Lobotes surinamensis, popularly known as tripletail fish. This marine fish species inhabits tropical and subtropical waters of all oceans, including the South Atlantic. In addition, this species has great potential for marine aquaculture (as studied in the North Atlantic region). However, information on the reproductive biology of this important fishery resource in the South Atlantic is still scarce. I share with you our recently published article in Environmental Biology of Fishes. In this study, we combined physiological and morphological tools to study the reproductive cycle of tripletail fish in the South Atlantic region. The results obtained will serve as a basis for future studies applied to Brazilian marine aquaculture.
